Tire traceability and tracking technology

4Jet has developed a mobile app for tire identification. The Scannect app – now available for iOS and Android – enables users to scan and decode QR codes on tire sidewalls.

Such laser-etched QR codes are increasingly used in passenger car and commercial tire applications and contain information about a tire’s origin, specifications and recommended mounting. The 4Jet app decodes the information and translates it back into plain data, such as the manufacturer name, TIN code, load- and speed-index, or directional information.

The app is free of charge and developers can integrate a white label version in fleet management, logistics or tire retail offerings by an App2App interface.

Unlike standard QR code reading apps, the advanced reading algorithm is able to decode Scannect codes even under difficult lighting conditions or on tires with high mileage. Deep learning mechanisms allow for permanent adoption of the decoding methods and the performance will improve upon usage.

BMW Group and several commercial tire makers have rolled out the technology since 2018. The laser-etched codes are considered to be a cost-efficient way to retrieve static data about a tire, complementing the capabilities of RFID-enhanced tire mounted sensors.
